Stevenson (Smiths) Jaguar XK120/140/150

Stevenson (Smiths) Jaguar Mk IV & Jaguar Mk V

Description

The diagram shows the Jaguar XK120 toolkit with a Stevenson sidelift jack incorporating a welded square section lifting arm. It is courtesy of SC Parts.

However, a long time owner (Rob Reilly) has sent me numerous photos and the following description that indicates the lifting arm for the XK120 was originally bolted in a fixed position and was of an H section. It was later changed to the square welded arm shown in the diagram. Rob Reilly describes the history of the Jaguar XK Series; Jaguar Mk IV; and Jaguar Mk V which shared the same jack:

"Here are a few pictures of one of the Stevenson jacks for my own 1950 Jaguar Mark V and 1951 XK120. Both cars were equipped with the same jack. I also include pictures of a ratchet handle and a brace with socket.

The short history of this design is thus:

1945-48 Jaguar Mark IV used this design with a 3/4” hex drive (possibly slightly smaller - may have been 7/16" Whitworth) and a 7” long solid square bar side arm. It was operated by an s-bend cranking handle with a socket on the end.

1948-49 Jaguar Mark V 4 door saloon initially used this same basic design with the 3/4” hex drive and a 5-1/4” long side arm of H cross section. The foot is labelled STEVENSON JACKING SYSTEMS WORLD PATENTS. There is a hole in the floor of the car for access where the jack fits into a socket on the chassis frame. It was operated by a brace with a 3/4” socket on the end also used for the wheel nuts.

Then in 1949 it was discovered that the wheel nut brace was cumbersome to operate in the confines of the Mark V 2 door Drop Head Coupe and the XK120.

Because of this, the jack was changed to a 1/2” hexagon drive and now operated by a ratchet handle. This change was applied in mid 1949 to all 3 Jaguar models then in production; Mark V saloon, Mark V Drop Head Coupe and XK120.

Later (unknown date) the wording on the foot was changed to SMITHS STEVENSON JACKING SYSTEMS.

Another change (unknown date), probably a cost reduction, was to eliminate the H section clamped side arm and substitute a square tube welded onto the side of the round main body.

Another change (unknown date), also probably a cost reduction, was to eliminate the forged foot and substitute a pressed steel foot.

This basic design continued on 1949-51 Mark V, 1948-54 XK120, 1954-57 XK140, and 1957-61 XK150, but with most XK150s it was painted black and had a decal with the name PRIMA."

One jack with the welded arm was recently advertised on Ebay March 2017). It had 4/53 punched under the foot.

Hydraulic Jacks

Smiths Hydraulic Side lift

Description

This hydraulic jack is 19.5" high retracted, extending to 30.5". The alloy body is cast on one side SMITHS JACKING SYSTEMS LTD CRICKLEWOOD LONDON and on the other USE ONLY JACKALL FLUID. The pressure release tap is stamped RELEASE, accompanied by an arrow. The lifting arm is fixed and is 1" diameter solid bar, 2.5" in length. Unusually for Smiths pole jacks this jack has no maker's name casting on the circular foot.

I have seen other versions of this jack. They have a hydraulic fluid filler plug below the 'use only Jackall fluid'. This one is blanked off. The only obvious way to top up seems to be to invert the jack and unscrew the container.

This type of jack was also provided to DWS (Donald W Sessons).

My photos except the last.

Applicable Vehicles:

Rover 14 1945 tp 1948

Rover 16  1945 to 1948

This style of jack was also used by Riley (see next entry but one), Alvis, Rover saloons and Lanchesters. There could be others. The lifting lug varies with types.

Smiths Hydraulic Side Lift-2

Description

This hydraulic jack is similar to the jack immediately above. It is taller, being 23.5" high retracted, extending to 38.5". The alloy body is cast on one side SMITHS JACKING SYSTEMS LTD CRICKLEWOOD LONDON and on the other USE ONLY JACKALL FLUID. The pressure release tap is stamped RELEASE, accompanied by an arrow. The lifting arm is adjustable as shown in the final photo. However, somewhat unusually, the footpad is cast DWS JACKING SYSTEMS PAT APP FOR.

Unlike the jack above this one has the fluid top up plug.

This type of jack was also provided to DWS (Donald W Sessons). This could account for the apparent mix up in the DWS casting on the foot.

My photos.
