Metallifacture - 3.8 E-Type Jaguar

Description

S1 3.8 and early 4.2 E-Type Jaguars after chassis No. 886246 were supplied with the cantilever jack made by METALLIFACTURE shown in the picture. Earlier E-Types were supplied with a Shelley LJ225 or Shelley LJ225 (ribbed) variant, for completeness, shown in the 3rd photo.

The Metallifacture jack has a square flat jacking pad and an integrated (non-detachable handle), unlike other similar jacks supplied with the Ford Cortina and Mini. It also has its feet mid body whereas the other version has its foot at the winder end. After 1967 Jaguar switched to the detachable handle variant to save costs.  Replacing faulty integrated ratchet handled jacks was proving costly for Jaguar, whereas with the later jacks only a faulty detachable handle was usually required to be replaced.

It is the rarest of the Metallifacture jacks supplied with E-Types. The other E-Type jacks are in the following 3 entries. Photo courtesy of Roger Payne in Australia.

I am informed by Davis Jones that the correct colour for the Metallifacture cantilever jacks is an 'RAF blue/grey' - code BS633.

Applicable Vehicles:

S1 3.8 and early 4.2 E-Type jaguars after chassis No. 886246.

E-Type summary courtesy of E-Type owner David Jones:

Same as the jack above, except it has a forked lifting pad to engage one of 4 jacking pegs.  The handle is integrated (non-detachable), making it one of the rarer E-Type jacks. After 1967 the jack was replaced by the one below (detachable handle), but retaining the forked pad.  The second photo actually shows one of the later (post 1967) jacks with the forked pad. Metallifacture - S3 V12 E-Type Jaguar

Description

Later S2 4.2 E-Types had this scissor jack with the square locating pad (1st photo). The jack illustrated in the 2nd and 3rd photos had a different mounting pad and was supplied with the S3 V12 E-Type Jaguar. I am interested to know the chassis number/year for the changeover to this jack.

The version (2nd and 3rd photos) used for early Series 3 E-Types (V12) was painted grey as for the Series 2 cars. Sometime in the early 72 model year, the colour was changed to metallic blue. Information courtesy of Andrew Kowalyk.

I am informed by Davis Jones that the correct colour for the Metallifacture cantilever jacks is an 'RAF blue/grey' - code BS633.

Applicable Vehicles:

S2 4.2 E-Type Jaguars (1st photo) and the S3 V12 E-Type Jaguar (2nd and 3rd photos).

Metallifacture Mini 1962 to 1968

Description

As with the jacks above, marked with the patent No. 903079. No details known other than shown in the pictures. Information required please. Examples noted in both the red shown and BS633 RAF Blue/Grey common to the E-Type variants.

The second picture shows the jack with the 'E-Type' style mid length foot, but with the Mini jacking saddle. The jack sold for 350.00, probably to an E-Type owner who wished to change the saddle.

Applicable Vehicles:

I believe this jack was supplied with the Morris Mini Minor Mk1, Van and Pick-up to perhaps 1967. The Mk1 was also supplied with the Shelley LJ225 (Mini) jack and the Shelley sidelift jack. The Austin Mini Mk1 was, I believe, supplied with a King Dick jack. The Shelley sidelift jack was continued to be supplied with later cars until the company went out of business. Rover then used its own brand of jack, see Rover Mini.

See the Vehicle Jack database for other Austin/Morris/BMC/Rover Mini jacks.

Metallifacture Cantilever - Unknown

Description

This cantilever jack has me baffled. It is in the style of the Cortina and Mini rather than the E-Type Jaguar. The photos and information are courtesy of Bob Hodgins. He informs me that it appears unrestored in its original black livery and also the Jaguar E-Type jacking pad looks original rather than a modification. The handle has instructions both in German and English and is only 8 inches long compared to the longer E-Type version.

I would like to hear from anyone who can shed light on which car may have used this jack.

Metallifacture Sidelift - MGB (Early?)

Description

When I first saw this jack I thought it was the version above but missing the capping over the winding mechanism. However, looking through the Haynes manual for the MGB it shows this jack in use on page 10 (4th photo). The jack owner tells me that it has no manufacturer markings so I have made the assumption it is Metallifacture since all other features appear similar to the one above. The jack is 19.5" high with a jacking spigot 10" long. Photos and information courtesy of Andrew Tyson.

George Radion sent me some additional photos, one of which shows a stamping RP14275 underneath the winder housing.

Applicable Vehicles:

MGB jack, possibly early models.  For other MGB jacks see the entry above, plus the  King Dick sidelift and Shelley sidelift jacks.

Metallifacture Tilt Action - Ford Thames Van

Description

The jack is a single screw standing 6.75" high, opening to 12". It pivots on the 6" x 3.5" base, presumably to allow the jack body to tilt when raising the axle, thereby maintaining the correct jacking angle. This could be indicative of use with a vehicle with a narrow wheel track. The body is cast METALLIFACTURE down both sides. The base is cast 57 and the number 61 is stamped. Debatable which is the date. The Q2C above has been seen with 2 different cast numbers suggesting that 57 is the date. Interestingly the screw shaft has a stopper pin preventing complete retraction. Photos and information courtesy of NewMoody.

Dave Melton has advised me that this jack is for the Ford Thames Van series, circa 1959. The final picture, supplied by Dave, shows the jack in the van driver's manual.
